new computer

so i got a new computer for christmas. dear god, it's SOOO much better than the one i had. here's the hardware it has:

i know i could've picked better options but.. i had to cheap out a little bit. it's still a fuckton better than my old computer. all of the stuff i've thrown at it runs perfectly fine. RPCS3 and Xenia in particular excite me the most. my old computer could run some games on them, but nowhere near as well as my new one can. for comparison sake, here's what my old computer had:

...yeah, i survived with that thing for about 8 years or so (originally i just used the iGPU, i added the dGPU later on). i moved the storage and power supply from it (having also upgraded both later down the line) to the new one. i guess it served me well but... it's time for an upgrade. i'm so glad i got to replace the crappy CPU in that thing. the FM2/FM2+ socket sucks ASS, any CPU upgrades i could've done would've given me a minimal performance improvement.

now, i do have a few complaints with my new pc. for one, i don't like how modern PC cases don't have a slot for optical drives. so my Blu-Ray drive has to stay on my old pc, unfortunately. i liked that thing because it let me rip PS3 games. the case i bought also only has one singular USB-A port, plus a USB-C port. i could probably get an adapter so that I can use the USB-C port as an USB-A port but... still, it's a bit annoying. i do also wish i was able to get another case, because after the Black Friday sales ended on the website i bought the parts on, the winter sales started right off, and when it did they managed to re-stock other cases which to me looked slightly nicer (and plus they had one or two more USB-A ports). but whatever, it still looks and feels nice.

the other thing is that i got an RX 580 2048SP instead of a normal RX 580. i didn't know about this until after i bought it, but the 2048SP is actually more like an RX 570 than an RX 580. it's essentially an RX 580 from china but with 2048 stream processors instead of 2304... so basically, an RX 570. that being said, i can overclock it to get the performance closer to an RX 580. besides, i would've bought it anyway, since it was the only one i could get at its price point.

but yeah, even with those minor issues, i'm still pretty happy with my new computer. i went with an AM5 CPU so that i could upgrade to a newer CPU later down the line, since AM4 is pretty much dead now. i also plan on upgrading the GPU and power supply in the future. those newer Intel GPUs are lookin' nice.

as for what i'll do with my old computer... i dunno. i might either add a new PSU to it (maybe i'll add its PSU back once i get a new one for my new computer) and a hard drive later to do stuff with it, or i might just sell it off. i guess we'll see.
